Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to offload a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following McLaren were valued at £3.5bn in a change of corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a shareholding approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Structure

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who each also own one-third of the company.

An official representative said: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The governance of Mercedes F1 will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Financial Increase

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in market values of F1 teams in the past few years as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the F1 movie featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned over $630 million (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the most successful sports film to date.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining this season.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a unprecedented eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
