Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to question certain decisions made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
