Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
